Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Aug 3: Commissionerate Police today arrested Satyajit Managovind Samal, a 36-year-old from Jajpur district, on charges of defrauding multiple women under the guise of marriage. Samal, who was residing in Chandrasekharpur, Bhubaneswar, posed as an Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer on a matrimonial website to deceive his victims.
Samal was apprehended after a trap set by the police. According to sources, a female officer engaged with him as part of the operation. He had a pattern of fleeing to Dubai after his scams. The arrest followed complaints from two victims at the Capital Police station. Samal had defrauded the first victim of Rs 36 lakh and a car, and the second victim of Rs 8 lakh and a bullet motorcycle.
Twin City Police Commissioner Sanjeeb Panda revealed that Samal not only defrauded women but also rented out the vehicles he obtained. “Samal would chat with victims on the matrimonial site, collect cash and vehicles, and then flee to Dubai,” said Panda.
Further investigation revealed that Samal had interacted with 49 other women on the matrimonial website and had two marriage agreements in his possession. He primarily targeted divorcees.
The arrest was challenging due to Samal’s tendency to flee to Dubai. The police managed to capture him by setting up a strategic trap. Seized from Samal were Rs 2 lakh in cash, several vehicles, and Rs 1 lakh from his bank account, which has been frozen.
