Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Aug 6: The potato crisis in Odisha has worsened, with the tuber virtually disappearing from major markets across the state. Reports indicate that potato stocks are rapidly depleting in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, and other commercial centers.
Traders report that no trucks carrying potatoes have arrived at the wholesale market in Chhatra Bazar, Cuttack, leading to a price increase. The price of potatoes, which had recently fallen to Rs 35 per kg, has surged to Rs 50 per kg in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.
In Bhubaneswar, potatoes have vanished from godowns, with no new consignments arriving at the Aiginia godown in the past two to three days. Traders claim that the lack of supply from West Bengal is exacerbated by demands for bribes, which are hindering the movement of trucks carrying potatoes into Odisha. Some trucks have managed to enter after paying bribes, according to a godown owner.
Despite state government assurances of supplies from Uttar Pradesh, no potato consignments have arrived from the northern state either. If the supply issue is not resolved soon, the state may face a severe potato shortage. Additionally, trucks from West Bengal are reportedly getting stranded at the border, causing further damage to the already limited stock.
