Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Aug 8: Odisha Excise Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan today announced that no new liquor shops will be granted licenses in the state. “A decision has been made to halt the issuance of new liquor shop licenses. We will introduce a new excise policy next year, which will undergo a comprehensive overhaul to address and combat the illegal sale of liquor more effectively,” Harichandan told reporters.

This announcement comes amidst speculation that the newly-elected BJP government is contemplating a phased approach to implementing a liquor ban in Odisha. Social Security Minister Nityananda Gond had previously suggested that the government is considering prohibition due to the social impact of alcohol addiction and will consult with the Excise Department and other relevant bodies to evaluate its feasibility.

However, the Excise Department has denied any discussions or plans to impose a complete liquor ban in the state. The department emphasizes its focus on revising existing policies to curb illegal liquor sales and improve enforcement measures.
