SRC alerts Odisha districts on rising Mahanadi water levels amid flood concerns

Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Aug 9: With 5.78 lakh cusecs of water flowing through the Mahanadi River at Mundali, the Office of the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) issued an alert on Friday for the collectors of 10 Odisha districts.

The districts under scrutiny include Sambalpur, Sonepur, Nayagarh, Angul, Boudh, Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, and Kendrapada. Collectors have been advised to focus on residents in low-lying areas, restrict access to submerged roads, culverts, and bridges, and report any untoward incidents immediately.

The Water Resources Department reported a notable increase in water flow at Mundali, with 5.87 lakh cusecs recorded at 6 am, which slightly decreased to 5.78 lakh cusecs by 8 am. Additionally, six more sluice gates at Hirakud Dam were opened to manage the floodwaters resulting from rains in the upper catchment areas.

Currently, 14 gates are releasing floodwater from the dam, including nine on the left spillway and five on the right. The dam’s water level was at 612.25 feet, close to its maximum capacity of 630 feet, and it was releasing 2,86,136 cusecs of water as of 6 am.
