Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Aug 29: A red warning for rain and thunderstorms has been issued for three districts in Odisha—Gajapati, Koraput, and Malkangiri—on Friday, as a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued an orange alert for four additional districts: Ganjam, Rayagada, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur. A red alert indicates heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, while an orange alert signifies isolated heavy rainfall.
According to the IMD, the low-pressure area formed over the central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal on Thursday morning, influenced by a cyclonic circulation in the east-central Bay of Bengal. This system is anticipated to move west-northwest and become more pronounced over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal by Friday.
The low-pressure area is expected to intensify into a depression over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal in the coming two days, with a trajectory towards the north Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha coasts.
