Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Sept 14: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds, is expected to impact several areas in Odisha as a deep depression moves into Gangetic West Bengal.
The deep depression, moving west-northwest at 28 kmph over the past six hours, is currently centered over Gangetic West Bengal and adjacent Bangladesh, approximately 50 km northeast of Kolkata. It is forecasted to continue its west-northwestward trajectory across Gangetic West Bengal, maintaining its intensity as a deep depression through Saturday. Following this, it will likely weaken into a depression as it moves through Jharkhand and north Chhattisgarh over the next 48 hours.
Odisha is anticipated to experience a period of heavy rainfall until September 16. The IMD has issued a red warning for several regions until Sunday morning, predicting isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm), with some areas potentially receiving extremely heavy rainfall (>20 cm) along with thunderstorms and lightning.
Flash floods and waterlogging are possible in low-lying areas, and there may be damage to informal or kutcha roads and vulnerable kutcha houses. Residents are advised to avoid staying in vulnerable kutcha houses and to follow traffic advisories to avoid congestion before traveling.
