Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Oct 8: In a significant breakthrough for law enforcement, a counterfeit currency note racket has been dismantled in the Jagatpur area of Cuttack, Odisha, leading to the arrest of one individual. Preliminary investigations reveal that the accused planned to circulate fake currency notes during the Durga Puja festival, targeting small businesses and street vendors who would be setting up temporary stalls for the celebrations.

Acting on a tip-off regarding the illegal operation, the police launched a swift response and apprehended the suspect, who is currently being interrogated by the Jagatpur police.

Sources indicate that the accused, identified as Nirmal Dehuri from the Bantala area in Angul, initially posed as a builder. He had promised to assist a local resident in purchasing land, demanding an advance payment of Rs 1.6 lakh. After the land deal fell through, Dehuri invited the victim to a hotel to discuss a settlement. Instead of returning the money, he attempted to lure the victim into the counterfeit currency business, showcasing samples of fake notes.

Dehuri claimed that with an investment of Rs 2.5 lakh, the victim could receive Rs 1 crore in counterfeit notes. Sensing something was amiss, the victim reported the incident to the police, which led to Dehuri’s arrest. Meanwhile, the mastermind behind the operation, Rahas Nayak, has managed to evade capture.
