President of India: Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Nov 21: President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday paid tribute to freedom fighter and former Odisha Chief Minister Harekrushna Mahtab, describing him as an inspirational leader whose legacy will continue to motivate future generations. Speaking at an event held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi to mark Mahtab’s 125th birth anniversary, the President recalled his significant contributions, including his literary works produced even during his imprisonment in the freedom struggle.
Mahtab, fondly known as ‘Utkal Keshari,’ was imprisoned for his participation in the Salt Satyagraha led by Mahatma Gandhi. He was also arrested during the Quit India movement in 1942 and incarcerated at the Ahmednagar Fort Jail. Despite the harsh conditions, he and fellow leaders transformed the jail into a learning center. During his time in prison, Mahtab wrote numerous poems, stories, and novels, including his famous book Orissa Itihas.
President Murmu emphasized that Mahtab’s legacy, alongside his literary and journalistic works, would continue to inspire people. A special commemorative stamp and coin were also unveiled to honor his contributions. The event was attended by Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, along with Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.
