Similipal Tiger Reserve: Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Nov 25: Ten days after being relocated to Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district from Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) in Maharashtra, the second tigress, ‘Zeenat’, was released into the core area of the sanctuary.
According to Susanta Nanda, PCCF (WL) & CWLW, Zeenat was taken to the North Division Core Area of Similipal at 9:30 PM on Sunday and released into the reserve forest. The Forest Department will monitor her movements for the next 24 hours to ensure her adaptation to the new environment.
Zeenat, a three-year-old tigress, was brought to Odisha as part of an interstate translocation program from TATR to infuse much-needed genetic diversity into Similipal’s tiger population. She had been in a soft enclosure at Similipal since November 15 after a 40-hour journey in a special vehicle, accompanied by a 10-member team.
Zeenat is the second tigress to be brought to Similipal under this initiative, following Jamuna, and both are now freely roaming in the sanctuary.
