Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Dec 6: Odia Language, Literature and Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj announced in the Assembly on Friday that there will be a complete ban on obscene dance and vulgarity during Jatra shows in Odisha.
This decision comes in response to growing public concern regarding the appropriateness of performances. While replying to a query from Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati, the Minister stated that the government is actively formulating strict guidelines to ensure that Jatra performances remain respectful and suitable for all audiences.
BJP member Sanatan Bijuli also voiced his support for a separate law that would prohibit obscene dance, emphasizing the need to preserve the cultural sanctity of Jatra while promoting family-friendly entertainment. During the Zero Hour discussion, Ekamra-Bhubaneswar MLA Babu Singh highlighted a recent public outcry regarding an objectionable performance by a theatre group in Ganjam district. He proposed that such performances undergo censorship before being staged.
In a related note, Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan mentioned plans to implement rules to curb nudity on stage during performances. Guidelines will cover various aspects, including appropriate costumes, dialogue delivery, and overall presentation, requiring theatre groups to obtain proper licenses and undergo regular monitoring.
