crime news: Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Dec 13: On Friday, the Commissionerate Police arrested four individuals in connection with an online gaming scam after detaining them the previous evening during a raid at an apartment in Odisha’s capital. Among the arrested, two are from Delhi, one hails from Hyderabad, and another from Gujarat.
The operation was carried out by the Cyber Police and Airfield Police on Thursday at Flat No. 602 of the Prestige apartment located in the Sundarpada area. The suspects allegedly impersonated a Chinese gaming website and sent fraudulent links via WhatsApp and Telegram to deceive unsuspecting individuals.
According to police reports, the scammers lured victims into joining social media groups by promising high returns on gaming investments. Participants were instructed to deposit money through UPI payments using QR codes, but once the funds were sent, the victims found their accounts blocked, preventing access to their invested money.
During the raid, authorities seized a substantial amount of evidence, including twenty smartphones, two computers, one laptop, CCTV cameras, multiple debit cards, Wi-Fi equipment, three passports, and various foreign currencies. The cybercrime operation had reportedly been running from the apartment for the past six months, with the mastermind identified as a BTech student.
