Odisha news: Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Dec 21: As incessant rainfall triggered by a depression over the Bay of Bengal continues to damage paddy crops in various regions of Odisha, the state government assured farmers on Saturday that they will receive compensation for their losses.

Cooperation Minister Pradeep Bal Samanta announced that the government is taking necessary measures to support farmers affected by the ongoing rainfall that has persisted since Friday. He emphasized that compensation will be provided if the rain significantly impacts the paddy crop.

To mitigate damage, the government has arranged to cover crops at the mandis, reducing the likelihood of paddy getting damaged there. However, the Minister acknowledged that there is a risk of crops sprouting due to the rain. He reassured farmers that paddy will be procured at the mandis once the crops have dried out after the rain subsides.

The rainfall has varied in intensity across the state, with a well-marked low-pressure area intensifying into a depression. As of this morning, Khurda recorded the highest rainfall at 75 mm, followed by Jagatsinghpur with 61.2 mm, Paradip with 61.1 mm, Bhubaneswar with 51.6 mm, and Gopalpur with 58.6 mm over the past 24 hours.
