Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), July 22: Devotees and Kanwariyas flocked to prominent Shiva shrines across Odisha on the first Monday of Shravan to pay their respects to Lord Shiva.

This year’s Sawan month, which spans from July 22 to August 19, is marked by a rare occurrence where both the start and end of Shravan fall on a Monday—a phenomenon not seen in 72 years. The significance of Mondays, or Shravan Somvars, during this holy month is heightened, with a total of five such Mondays this year.

The month of Shravan begins under the constellation ‘Shravan,’ which is believed to bring increased blessings from Lord Shiva and alleviate many challenges due to the Moon’s influence.

Devotees performed rituals by offering milk, water, and ‘bel’ leaves to Lord Shiva. Kanwariyas were also seen in large numbers at various shrines, pouring holy water over Shiva Lingas.

According to tradition, prayers offered to Lord Shiva on Shravan Somvars are believed to fulfill wishes. Major temples such as Lingaraj in Bhubaneswar, Lokanath in Puri, Dhabaleswar in Athagarh, Kapilash in Dhenkanal, Gupteswar in Koraput, and Harishankar in Balangir see a surge in visitors during this auspicious month.

To ensure a smooth experience for devotees, extensive police and administrative measures have been implemented at key Shiva shrines across the state.
