odisha news: Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen) March 11: Odisha has reported a staggering 142% increase in financial fraud complaints in 2024 compared to the previous year, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed the state Assembly on Monday.

Responding to a query from BJD MLA Ranendra Pratap Swain, the Chief Minister revealed that 43,740 cases of financial fraud were recorded in 2024, a sharp rise from 18,081 cases in 2023. The total monetary loss linked to these frauds reached an alarming ₹415.90 crore, marking a 400% surge from ₹79.66 crore in 2023.

Of the reported fraud amount, ₹39.42 lakh was successfully recovered by police, while financial institutions managed to freeze ₹3.5 crore based on complaints received through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) and helpline 1930. In January alone, 4,314 cases amounting to ₹41.86 crore were reported, underscoring a growing cybercrime trend.

In 2024, police registered 1,553 cyber fraud cases and arrested 191 people, including two women. The government is enhancing cybersecurity efforts, with officers undergoing national-level training and acquiring advanced forensic tools to combat digital financial fraud.
