Bhubaneswar Airport set for expansion with new terminal next to existing facility

Bhubaneswar Airport:Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Oct 4: To enhance passenger handling capacity, a new terminal will be constructed next to the existing one at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar, as announced by Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu on Friday.

Following a review meeting, Naidu confirmed that permission for the new terminal is expected to be granted within a month. He highlighted that Terminal 1 is currently accommodating 50 lakh passengers, surpassing its intended capacity of 40 lakh per year. Consequently, the capacity needs to be expanded to handle 80 lakh passengers annually.

The construction of the new terminal is set to begin within the next two years. In addition, Naidu mentioned that various small projects, including extensions and improved passenger amenities, are already in progress and will be completed shortly. The existing Instrument Landing System (ILS) will also be upgraded from CAT I to CAT II within a month.

He emphasized the airport’s significant growth, connecting 20 domestic cities and four international destinations, and reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure in the civil aviation sector.
