crime news: Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Dec 13: A day after the tragic shooting of a seven-month-pregnant woman in Sundargarh district, Tikayatpali police detained four individuals for questioning, including the victim’s husband, Deben Behera, and a police officer.
Samyamayee Behera, aged 33, was shot during a suspected robbery at her home in Jhridapali village on the night between Wednesday and Thursday. Deben, a local Panchayat Extension Officer (PEO), reported to the police that two unidentified men knocked on their door around 12:50 a.m.
When Samyamayee opened the door, the intruders reportedly forced their way inside. One of them snatched her mangalsutra, while the other shot her when she screamed for help, killing her instantly.
However, police sources indicate that authorities suspect the incident may have been a premeditated murder orchestrated by Deben and his accomplices. Discrepancies in the timelines provided by Deben, his mother, and his aunt raised suspicion.
Additionally, a neighbor claimed to have heard the gunshot at around 12:20 a.m. Despite the proximity of the hospital—just a 20-minute drive away—Samyamayee was declared dead on arrival at 1:40 a.m., leading to allegations that Deben delayed calling for help, despite knowing how to drive. The investigation continues as police work to uncover the truth behind this tragic incident.
