Cyclone Fengal: Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Nov 29: A cyclonic storm named ‘Fengal’ formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal at around 2:30 PM on Friday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The storm, intensifying from a deep depression, is expected to move west-northwestwards and make landfall along the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, near Puducherry, on November 30 afternoon. The wind speed during landfall is predicted to range between 70-80 kmph, gusting up to 90 kmph.
In Odisha, light to moderate rainfall is likely at isolated places over the coming days. Coastal districts, along with Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Boudh, Rayagada, and Koraput, may experience rain on November 29. On November 30 and December 1, rainfall may occur in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, and coastal Odisha. By December 2, districts including Nabarangpur, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Bhadrak, Balasore, and Mayurbhanj are expected to receive light rain.
No significant change in night temperatures is anticipated for the next 4-5 days, IMD added. ‘Fengal,’ named by Saudi Arabia, derives from Arabic, symbolizing cultural heritage and linguistic tradition.
