Cyclonic depression over Bay of Bengal to have minimal impact on Odisha

Cyclonic depression: Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Oct 16: The Cyclonic Depression over the Bay of Bengal is forecasted to make landfall near Chennai on Thursday morning but is unlikely to significantly affect Odisha.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Depression, which has been moving west-northwest at a speed of 15 kmph, was located at 8:30 AM over the Southwest and adjoining West-central Bay of Bengal, approximately 320 km east-southeast of Chennai, 350 km east-northeast of Puducherry, and 400 km southeast of Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. It is expected to move towards the north Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, near Chennai, early on October 17.

Winds are anticipated to reach speeds of 35-55 kmph as the system approaches.

On October 16, light to moderate rain and thundershowers are predicted in isolated areas of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Jharsuguda. The following day, similar conditions may occur in Cuttack, Khurda, Nayagarh, Puri, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

Light to moderate rainfall is expected to persist in some regions until October 22. A yellow warning for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning has been issued for several districts from October 18 to 20.

Thunderstorms with lightning may occur at isolated locations in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati on October 18. The same warning applies to the same districts, along with Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, and Nabarangpur, on October 19. On October 20, thunderstorms with lightning are likely in isolated areas of Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Nawarangpur, Kalahandi, Ganjam, and Gajapati.
