earthquake: Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Feb 25: A moderate earthquake of magnitude 5.1 on the Richter scale was recorded early Tuesday morning near Puri in Odisha, according to officials. The tremor occurred at around 6:10 AM at a depth of 91 km in the Bay of Bengal.

The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported that the earthquake was detected at latitude 19.52°N and longitude 88.55°E. Although the epicenter was located approximately 286 km east of Puri and 297 km east-southeast of Bhubaneswar, the impact on land was minimal.

A senior Odisha government official confirmed that there were no reports of casualties or property damage. “The impact was negligible as the quake’s center was deep in the Bay of Bengal,” he stated.

Despite this, mild tremors were felt in several districts, including Puri, Paradip, Berhampur, Bhubaneswar, Baripada, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, and Balasore, causing brief panic among residents. Many people rushed out of their homes, fearing aftershocks.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, and disaster response teams remain on alert. No aftershocks have been reported so far.
