Election Commission announces poll dates for Maharashtra and Jharkhand assembly elections

New Delhi, Oct 15: The Election Commission announced polling dates on Tuesday for the upcoming assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand. In Maharashtra, voters will cast their ballots in a single phase on November 20, while Jharkhand will hold elections in two phases on November 13 and 20. Results for both states will be revealed on November 23.

With the announcement of the poll dates, the Model Code of Conduct has come into effect. In Maharashtra, the last date for filing nominations is October 29, with scrutiny scheduled for October 30 and the withdrawal of nominations allowed until November 4.

Maharashtra’s Legislative Assembly consists of 288 seats, and its term is set to conclude on November 26. The current assembly is governed by the Mahayuti alliance, led by the BJP, which holds 102 seats. Other alliance members include the NCP with 40 seats, SHS with 38, and various smaller parties.

Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, where the assembly has 81 seats, the current term will end on January 5. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) is aiming for a second term, while the opposition BJP seeks to reclaim power. In the previous 2019 elections, the JMM won 30 seats, Congress secured 16, and the BJP obtained 25.
