Balasore,(Reporterspen), May 1: The Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system underwent a successful flight test at around 08:30 am on Wednesday from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, located off the coast of Odisha.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), SMART represents a next-generation missile-based lightweight torpedo delivery system, aimed at significantly enhancing the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities beyond traditional lightweight torpedo ranges.

This canister-based missile system comprises advanced subsystems including a two-stage solid propulsion system, electromechanical actuator system, and precision inertial navigation system. The system carries an advanced lightweight torpedo as its payload, equipped with a parachute-based release system.

The missile was launched from a ground mobile launcher, with the successful validation of several state-of-the-art mechanisms such as symmetric separation, ejection, and velocity control during the test.

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh commended DRDO and its industry partners for the successful flight test of SMART, emphasizing that the system’s development will bolster the Navy’s strength.

Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, Dr Samir V Kamat, praised the collaborative efforts of the entire SMART team and urged them to maintain their pursuit of excellence.
