Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Aug 27: The intensity of rainfall in Odisha is expected to increase starting August 29 due to the formation of a low-pressure area over Eastcentral and adjoining North Bay of Bengal. This system is anticipated to move west-northwestwards towards the South Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh coasts over the next two days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The IMD forecasts that Odisha will continue to experience heavy rain on August 27-28, with a further increase in intensity over the following three days. The low-pressure area, currently over Northwest Jharkhand and nearby regions, is expected to move west-northwest across Jharkhand, north Chhattisgarh, and adjacent southeast Uttar Pradesh before weakening over the next 24 hours.
On August 27, heavy rainfall of 7 to 11 cm may affect parts of Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Bargarh, and Angul districts. The IMD has also issued a nowcast warning for light to moderate rain and thundershowers in Khurda (including Bhubaneswar), Cuttack (including Cuttack city), Nayagarh, and Puri districts until 5 pm.
For August 28, heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is predicted in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam districts. Thunderstorms with lightning may also impact Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh districts.
The IMD has issued an orange warning for August 29, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) along with thunderstorms and lightning in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, and Rayagada districts. Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning are also expected in Ganjam, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Balangir, Nuapada, Nayagarh, Khurda, and Puri districts.
