KIIT student suicide case: Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Feb 20: The Infocity Police on Thursday took Advik Srivastava, the prime accused in the alleged suicide case of Prakriti Lamsal, a Nepalese student of KIIT University, on a three-day remand.
Advik, a resident of Lucknow, has been booked under Section 108 of the BNS (abetment of suicide). Police have sent the seized mobile phones and laptops of both the victim and the accused for forensic analysis.
A high-power committee formed by the Odisha government has announced that a voice spectrography test will be conducted on Advik to verify the authenticity of multiple viral audio clips. The recordings, allegedly featuring conversations between the accused and the victim, suggest verbal abuse and have intensified demands for justice.
Prakriti’s cousin, who filed the police complaint, alleged that she was being blackmailed by a male student from the same university. He claimed that she had raised concerns with the university’s International Relations Office, but no action was taken.
KIIT University stated that Prakriti was reportedly in a relationship with another student and may have taken the extreme step due to undisclosed reasons.
The 20-year-old engineering student was found hanging in her hostel room on Sunday, triggering widespread protests. The situation escalated after the university allegedly evicted agitating students without travel arrangements, drawing intervention from Nepal’s Prime Minister.
In response, the Odisha government formed a high-power committee to probe the matter. The university later issued an apology, suspended three employees for misconduct, and dismissed two security guards accused of assaulting protesting students.
