Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Aug 19: State Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan announced on Monday that Odisha will hold its Students’ Union elections next year, after an eight-year hiatus. The announcement was made during a program in Jajpur.
Harichandan explained that the elections are typically conducted in the first week of September each year. However, due to the recent formation of the BJP government, there was insufficient time to prepare for the elections this year. He assured that colleges will be prepared for the polls, which will take place next year.
“A decision has already been made to hold the students’ union elections next year,” Harichandan stated. He also emphasized that ensuring peaceful polls in colleges is the government’s responsibility. He criticized the previous BJD government for its failure to manage the elections and expressed confidence that the Lyngdoh Commission’s guidelines could be effectively implemented if political interference is avoided.
It is important to note that students’ union elections in Odisha have been postponed since 2018 to maintain campus peace. The elections were initially delayed due to Cyclone Titli in 2018 and subsequently postponed in 2019 by the state government.
