low pressure: Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Oct 17: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Thursday that a new low-pressure area is likely to form over the central Bay of Bengal around October 22. This development will be preceded by the formation of an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the North Andaman Sea around October 20. IMD predicts the low-pressure system will gradually move northwestward and intensify further.
Meanwhile, the depression over the west-central Bay of Bengal crossed the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts near Chennai in the early hours of Thursday. By 5:30 am, it weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north coastal Tamil Nadu. IMD forecasts further weakening within six hours as it moves west-northwest.
In Odisha, light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected across several districts, including Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Cuttack, Khurda, and Puri on October 17.
A yellow alert for thunderstorms with lightning has been issued for October 18-19. Districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Khurda, and Ganjam are likely to experience isolated thunderstorms on October 18, with more widespread warnings covering coastal, southern, and interior regions, including Sonepur, Balangir, and Kandhamal, on October 19.
Light to moderate rainfall may persist across parts of south and coastal Odisha until October 23, according to IMD’s latest advisory.
