Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Sept 13: The Cyber Crime unit of the Odisha Crime Branch has arrested Biranchi Narayan Nath from Chhendipada, Angul district, for allegedly sexually and financially exploiting several middle-aged women.
Biranchi created a fraudulent profile on a matrimonial website under the tagline “Second Marriage” and impersonated various professionals, including a Railway employee, Income Tax Inspector, and Customs Officer, using multiple aliases such as Manas Ratha, Pravakar Srivastav, and Biranchi Narayan Nath.
He targeted unmarried, separated, widowed, or divorced middle-aged women. Initially, he made contact through marriage proposals on the site, followed by phone calls and home visits. He manipulated his victims emotionally, promising lifelong support for their children and companionship. He also promised job opportunities post-marriage. Biranchi performed marriage rituals with several women in temples and cohabited with them but never brought them to his own home.
He secretly recorded intimate moments and took nude photos and videos of the victims during video calls. He then extorted money, gold, and other valuables from them, threatening to post their private images online if they did not comply with his demands.
The latest case involves a woman from Cuttack who lost her husband in a road accident in 2022 and was seeking a secure future for her and her two daughters. In October 2023, she registered for a second marriage on the matrimonial portal where Biranchi had multiple fake profiles. She received a request from a profile named Pravakar Srivastav, who claimed to be a TTI in Railways at Visakhapatnam and made false claims about his personal life.
