Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Dec 6: Dinabandhu Rout, a 40-year-old man, tragically succumbed to his burn injuries on Friday at SCB Medical College and Hospital (MCH) in Cuttack, Odisha, just five days after being set ablaze by his father. The incident occurred on December 1 in Barisinga village during a heated argument. Gobardhan Rout, aged 70, allegedly poured petrol on both his son and daughter-in-law, Sasmita Rout, 37, and ignited the flames while they were having dinner around 10 PM.
The couple suffered severe burns, with injuries covering over 60% of their bodies, and were initially rescued by neighbors. They were rushed to SCB MCH before being transferred to a private hospital, where Sasmita tragically passed away. Dinabandhu was later returned to SCB MCH for continued treatment.
Authorities reported that the incident stemmed from a financial dispute between the father and son, along with Gobardhan’s objections to Dinabandhu’s habit of spending money on ganja. Gobardhan has been arrested and allegedly confessed to the crime under the influence of drugs. The couple leaves behind a five-year-old son, who narrowly escaped the tragedy by sleeping in another room with his great-grandmother that night.
