Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Aug 27: The Odisha Assembly on Tuesday faced significant disruption as opposition BJD and Congress members protested over reservation and a caste-based census. Speaker Surama Padhy intervened by convening an all-party meeting to restore order in the House.

As the session began, BJD and Congress members raised concerns and demanded reservations for SCs, STs, and OBCs in education. During the question hour, legislators from BJD, Congress, and CPI(M) stormed the well of the House, calling for reservations and a caste-based census.

The House experienced multiple adjournments due to the uproar and slogan-shouting by opposition members. In an effort to address the situation, Speaker Padhy called an all-party meeting, which helped to de-escalate tensions. Following this, the opposition resumed participation in the proceedings, although Congress continued to press for a statement from the Chief Minister on the reservation issue.

Earlier, the protests had led to noisy scenes and a temporary adjournment of the House until 11:30 am.
