Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Aug 7: The Ministry of Home Affairs has appointed Rashmi Ranjan Swain, a senior IPS officer from Odisha, as the new Director General of Police (DGP) for Jammu and Kashmir. According to the order issued by the MHA on Wednesday, Swain, who is currently serving as the additional charge DGP for J&K, will officially take on the role effective immediately. His appointment is set to last until September 30, 2024, or until further orders.
A 1991 batch IPS officer, Swain has been serving as the in-charge DGP of Jammu and Kashmir since November 2023, following the retirement of his predecessor, Dilbag Singh. Before this role, he held various senior positions, including Special DG CID and police chief for Jammu and Srinagar cities. He has also had a notable 15-year tenure on central deputation.
Swain hails from Rourkela, Odisha, and has previously served as SSP in Jammu and Srinagar from 2003 to 2004, as well as in Leh, Poonch, and Ramban. He was also involved with the J&K Vigilance agency before his central deputation, which included international postings for exceptional officers.
