Odisha braces for heavy rain as deep depression moves across state

Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Sept 9: The Deep Depression crossed the Odisha coast near Puri between 10:30 am and 11:30 am on Monday, according to Umashankar Das, a scientist at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhubaneswar. The IMD forecasts that the system will continue to move northwest across Odisha, maintaining its intensity as a Deep Depression until evening before gradually weakening into a Depression by midnight. It is expected to then move west-northwest across Chhattisgarh over the next 24 hours.

Under the influence of this system, Odisha is expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall until September 11, with the peak of the rainfall occurring on Monday and decreasing gradually thereafter. Squally weather with wind speeds reaching 55-65 kmph, gusting up to 75 kmph, is likely to persist over northwest and adjoining northeast and central Bay of Bengal and along the Odisha coast until noon. By evening, wind speeds are expected to decrease to 45-55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph.

Red Warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) at a few places, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall (>20 cm) in Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khurda, Puri, Balangir, and Boudh.
Orange Warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) may occur at isolated places in Cuttack, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Sonepur, Bargarh, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Sambalpur, and Gajapati.

Yellow Warning: Heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) is likely at isolated places in Bhadrak, Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Deogarh, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh.
