Odisha braces for heavy rainfall as cyclonic circulation set to intensify

Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Aug 7: Odisha is anticipated to experience significant rainfall due to a cyclonic circulation expected to strengthen into a low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal, adjacent regions of Jharkhand, and North Odisha within the next 24 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday.

An orange warning has been issued for heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) at one or two locations in the districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Koraput, and Nabarangpur until 8:30 am on Thursday. Heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) is also expected in parts of Malkangiri, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Boudh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Balangir, and Sonepur.

Bhubaneswar is likely to see a cloudy sky with occasional rain or thundershowers.
The IMD has warned of temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas, poor visibility during heavy rain, and potential traffic congestion in urban areas. There may also be damage to unmetalled roads, risk of mudslides in vulnerable hilly areas, and impacts on vegetables and horticultural crops.

The intensity of the rain is expected to gradually decrease after this period. On August 8, heavy rain warnings will continue for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sonepur, and Balangir districts. Further heavy rain is anticipated in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Deogarh in the following 24 hours, with additional rainfall expected in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Deogarh on August 10.
