Odisha braces for intense rainfall as depression intensifies into deep depression

Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Sept 8: Odisha is expected to experience intense rainfall as a Depression over the Bay of Bengal is projected to move northward towards the North Odisha-West Bengal coasts and intensify into a Deep Depression within the next 24 hours.

The system is likely to continue moving west-northwestward and cross the Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Digha around the evening or night of September 9, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

As of 8:30 AM today, the Depression was centered over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, approximately 280 km east of Kalingapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 230 km east-southeast of Gopalpur (Odisha), 260 km south-southeast of Paradip (Odisha), and 390 km south of Digha (West Bengal). It is expected to move northward and then west-northwestward, crossing the Odisha and adjoining West Bengal coasts. The system will likely continue moving across Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, and northern Chhattisgarh over the following two days.

The IMD has issued red, orange, and yellow warnings, forecasting extremely heavy to very heavy rain in Odisha until September 11.
