odisha news: Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), March 11: Odisha is set to experience an early onset of heatwave conditions, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow warning for three days, starting from March 13. This marks an unusual departure from last year when no heatwave days were recorded in March.
The warning applies to Boudh, Sonepur, Balangir, Bargarh, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, and Sambalpur districts on March 13. On March 14 and 15, the alert extends to include Angul. This period coincides with the celebrations of Dola Purnima and Holi, raising concerns about public health and outdoor festivities.
According to the IMD, the maximum temperature is expected to rise gradually by 2-3°C over the next five days, while minimum temperatures will remain steady. A heatwave is officially declared when the daytime temperature reaches at least 40°C and exceeds normal levels by 4.5-6.4°C for two consecutive days in at least two locations.
Meteorologists attribute the temperature surge to hot and dry northwesterly winds sweeping across the state. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, and take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.
