odisha news: Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Nov 20: After the arrest of two poachers who killed a leopard using an electric trap and consumed its meat in Odisha’s Nuapada district, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Susanta Nanda on Wednesday called for a social boycott of individuals involved in such “outlandish” activities.
He condemned the act as unprecedented and regressive, stating that such behavior has no place in a civilized society. “Big cats hunt humans only in extreme circumstances. Those who kill leopards and consume their meat should be ostracized. They do not deserve to be part of a civilized society as they are destroying our natural heritage,” he told reporters.
The PCCF added that Odisha is home to over 600 leopards, and while the species is not endangered, killing them for meat is detrimental to society.
The accused, Pustam Chinda (58) and Hrusikesh Chinda (40) from Deodhara under Komna police limits, set an electric trap to capture wild boars on Sunday, but a leopard was killed instead. They skinned the animal and cooked its meat, abandoning its head, skin, and other remains by a river. Two additional suspects are still at large.
