Odisha News: Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Feb 12: Fresh allegations of ragging have surfaced at the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), with a second-year student accusing his seniors of verbal abuse and physical harassment.
According to reports, the student was allegedly abused and assaulted by third-year students on February 7. The incident came to light when the victim shared his ordeal with his mother, who promptly reported the matter to Professor Pradeep Kumar Mohanty, Dean of VIMSAR, over the phone.
Acting on the complaint, Prof. Mohanty has constituted a special committee to investigate the allegations and recommend necessary actions if the claims are substantiated. Speaking to the media, he confirmed that the student’s mother alleged her son was manhandled and verbally abused. He assured that strict action would be taken based on the findings of the probe.
Despite past incidents and strict anti-ragging measures, VIMSAR continues to witness cases of harassment. In March 2021, at least 18 MBBS students were victims of ragging, and a similar case was reported in September 2019. While the institute has imposed hefty fines and disciplinary measures, concerns remain over its effectiveness in curbing the menace.
