Bhubaneswar, (Reporters Pen): Sept 4: Garlic and onions have seen a sharp price increase in Odisha, impacting major cities like Berhampur, Bhubaneswar, and Cuttack. In Berhampur, onions are now priced at Rs 55 per kg, while garlic costs Rs 400 per kg. Bhubaneswar has reported even higher prices, with onions at Rs 60 per kg and garlic ranging from Rs 300 to Rs 350 per kg.
This price surge follows a recent resolution of the potato supply issue with West Bengal, which had previously driven up potato prices. Consumers are now facing the strain of rising onion and garlic costs.
Traders attribute the price hike to rain-related delays in supply from Nashik, raising concerns that prices could climb even further. A trader in Bhubaneswar’s Unit 6 area noted that while potato prices have stabilized at Rs 30 to 35 per kg, the wholesale price of onions has jumped from Rs 40 to Rs 55 per kg in just a few days. The increase has led to a decrease in the consumption of onions and garlic across the state.
