Samir Dey dies: Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), Nov 18: Senior BJP leader and former Odisha minister Samir Dey passed away on Monday at the age of 67 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Cuttack. Dey had been admitted to the hospital on November 1 after suddenly falling ill. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, along with Deputy CM Pravati Parida, had visited him on November 16.
Dey represented the Cuttack Assembly constituency for three consecutive terms, winning the elections in 1995, 2000, and 2004. He also served as a Cabinet Minister in the BJD-BJP alliance government between 2000 and 2009, holding the positions of Urban Development Minister from 2000 to 2004 and Higher Education Minister from 2004 to 2009.
In his tribute, Chief Minister Majhi announced that Dey’s last rites will be performed with full state honors. Deputy CM Pravati Parida paid her respects on X, noting Dey’s significant contributions, especially during the Ram Janma Bhoomi Andolan, and his impactful role as a minister. Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahtab also remembered Dey’s vision for Cuttack’s development, highlighting his leadership in establishing universities and driving reforms in higher education.
