Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), May 30: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced via its X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday that the Southwest Monsoon has made its onset in Kerala and has progressed into most parts of Northeast India.

The IMD’s official communication stated, “Southwest Monsoon has arrived over Kerala and expanded into most regions of Northeast India today, on May 30, 2024.” This development marks a significant relief from the scorching temperatures, as the monsoon brings the promise of heavy rainfall upon touching Kerala.

The IMD’s Updated Long Range Forecast Outlook, released on Monday, had predicted above-average monsoon rains for the country this year, reaffirming its earlier forecast in April. The department had anticipated the monsoon’s arrival in Kerala by today.

“Quantitatively, the southwest monsoon seasonal rainfall across the country is projected to be 106 percent of the Long Period Average (LPA), with a model error of 4 percent. Consequently, above-normal rainfall is expected nationwide during the monsoon season from June to September 2024,” the IMD stated.

Meanwhile, it’s noteworthy that India’s capital city, Delhi, experienced a record-high temperature of 52.3 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, as reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
