IMD warns of heatwave in Odisha amid monsoon progression

Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), June 19: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow warning for heatwave conditions in Balangir, Nuapada, and Jharsuguda districts of Odisha, as the southwest monsoon is expected to advance further into the region in the next 2-3 days.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds reaching 30-40 kmph are also forecasted in several districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, and others till 8.30 am on Thursday, June 20.

Similar weather conditions are anticipated in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj districts over the next 24 hours. The IMD predicts thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds in Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj on June 21, and in Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Balasore on June 22-23.
Hot and humid weather is expected to prevail in Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, and Gajapati districts until June 21. The IMD also anticipates a gradual decrease in daytime temperatures by 2-4 degrees Celsius over the next 24 hours.

Earlier forecasts from the SOA’s Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) suggested a drop in maximum temperatures by 3 degrees Celsius in parts of Odisha from Wednesday onwards. The strengthening Arabian branch of the monsoon, accompanied by westerly wind flow, is likely to facilitate pre-monsoon rainfall on June 18 and 19, with the onset of the Southwest monsoon expected in south Odisha districts and Bhubaneswar around June 20.
