IMD warns of heavy rain in Odisha as low-pressure area forms

Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), June 28: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported the formation of a low-pressure area over the Northwest Bay of Bengal off the north Odisha coast on Friday (June 28). This weather system is expected to move northwestward over the next two days, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall to Odisha until June 30.

IMD has issued a yellow warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places across districts including Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Jajpur, Kendrapada, and Bhadrak on June 28. Additionally, districts like Khurda, Puri, Balasore, Cuttack, Balangir, Nuapada, Boudh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Gajapati, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Koraput may experience heavy rainfall. There is also a warning for thunderstorms with lightning in several districts.

Bhubaneswar is likely to witness cloudy skies accompanied by heavy rain. On June 29, heavy to very heavy rain is expected in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Sundargarh districts, with heavy rainfall anticipated in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Deogarh, Angul, and Dhenkanal.

Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, and Keonjhar districts may continue to experience heavy rainfall over the subsequent 24 hours.

IMD has also cautioned about squally weather conditions with surface wind speeds reaching 40 to 50 kmph over the northwest Bay of Bengal off the Odisha coast until June 30. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea in these areas during this period.

While no further weather warnings have been issued, light to moderate rainfall is expected at various places in the state until July 4, according to IMD.
