Bhubaneswar, (Repoterspen), July 1: The Laxmisagar police station in Bhubaneswar registered one of the first FIRs under the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which came into effect on July 1.
The case was filed based on a complaint lodged by Rudra Pratap Das, alleging that three assailants on motorcycles attacked his father, Gauranga Charana Das, near Chintamaniswar temple on June 29, slashing his neck with a blade. According to Inspector-in-Charge Shyamsundar Rao, the accused had previously threatened the family to deter them from filing a police complaint.

The FIR has been filed under Sections 126 (2), 115 (2), 109 (1), and 3 (5) of the BNS, sources confirmed.
Earlier, Home Minister Amit Shah had announced during a press conference that the first FIR under the new criminal laws was also registered at a police station in Gwalior.

Enacted last year, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam 2023 have replaced the British-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and Indian Evidence Act, respectively. Key features of these new laws include zero FIR provisions, online police complaint registration, electronic summons, and mandatory videography of crime scenes for all serious offenses.
