Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), June 17: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected continued hot and humid weather with thunderstorm activity until June 19 in Odisha, alongside predictions of heavy rainfall at isolated locations on June 20-21.

The IMD also anticipates the Southwest Monsoon’s progression into more parts of the state over the next four days, following its onset on June 8, which has been slow. This delay has contributed to heatwave conditions in interior districts and muggy weather along the coast. Currently, the monsoon is active in Malkangiri and Koraput districts.

Odisha has received 36.6 mm of rainfall so far, falling short of the expected 91.4 mm by 42%. According to the IMD, hot and humid conditions may persist in select areas including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati until June 19.

Additionally, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds up to 30-40 kmph are likely in Khurda, Nayagarh, Nuapada, Balangir, Boudh, and Kalahandi districts on June 17, and in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Dhenkanal, Angul, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Khurda, Nayagarh, Nuapada, Balangir, Boudh, and Kalahandi on June 18-19.

The forecast also includes heavy rainfall at isolated spots in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Bargarh districts on June 20, followed by similar conditions in Balangir, Nuapada, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal on June 21.
