Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), June 6: The Southwest Monsoon is expected to arrive in Odisha on June 9, according to the Bhubaneswar regional center of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). Rainfall is likely to first hit southern and coastal Odisha before spreading to other parts of the state.

The weather office indicated that current conditions are conducive for the onset of the Southwest Monsoon, which typically arrives in Odisha during the second week of June.

“The Southwest Monsoon usually reaches Odisha around June 12 or 13. We anticipate that it will reach southern Odisha within the next three to four days. So far, the conditions are favorable,” said Manorama Mohanty, director of IMD Bhubaneswar.

The monsoon has already arrived early in the Andaman and Kerala regions. It typically begins in Kerala on June 1 and progresses to the northeastern parts of India shortly thereafter.

Meanwhile, the weather department has issued a warning about ongoing heatwave conditions in western Odisha for the next two days. An orange warning has been issued for Bolangir and Bargarh, and a yellow warning has been issued for Thursday for Kalahandi, Nuapada, Subarnapur, and Sambalpur. The day temperatures in some interior districts of Odisha are expected to exceed 40°C. Additionally, there is a risk of light to moderate rain and lightning in some interior districts of the state.
