Bhubaneswar, (Repoterspen), July 1: Nine individuals, including both regular and contractual employees, were hospitalized on Monday following a suspected leakage of liquefied carbon monoxide gas from a blast furnace at the Steel Authority of India Limited-run Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) in Odisha’s Rourkela steel township.

The industrial incident occurred while employees were engaged in operations at the blast furnace. According to an RSP official, the employees exhibited symptoms of dizziness and nausea after exposure to the toxic gases.

Upon experiencing discomfort, they were swiftly transported to Ispat General Hospital where they are currently recovering, with their conditions reported as stable. The source of the suspected gas leak has been successfully sealed off in a timely manner, the official confirmed.

In response to the incident, RSP authorities have established an inquiry committee to determine the precise cause. The official emphasized that strict disciplinary measures will be taken if safety lapses are identified by the committee.

While the news of the gas leak initially caused alarm among residents of the steel town, they were reassured as the impact was contained within the plant site.
