Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), June 27: Thirteen individuals, aged between 50 and 70, suffered partial vision loss following a suspected botched cataract surgery at a private clinic in Odisha’s Angul district last week.

According to reports, these patients, including five women from Banarpal and Athmalik, underwent surgeries on June 20 conducted by a visiting doctor who performs scheduled procedures every Thursday at the clinic. While initial recovery appeared positive within 24 hours post-surgery, patients soon complained of severe pain, headaches, and vision impairment, leading them to be admitted to VIMSAR on June 22.

Although discharged from VIMSAR after treatment by Wednesday evening, none of the patients have fully regained their vision.

VIMSAR Superintendent Lalmohan Nayak stated to the media that while the patients were released, their vision remains compromised, and the exact cause is yet to be determined.

In response, local authorities have sealed the private clinic, and Angul CDMO Sibananda Mohanty has initiated an inquiry. He assured that strict actions will be taken against those responsible once culpability is established.
