Boat capsize incident: President Murmu offers sympathy to families of victims

Bhubaneswar, (Reporterspen), April 20: President Droupadi Murmu of India conveyed her sorrow on Saturday following the tragic loss of eight lives in a boat capsize incident along the Mahanadi River near Jharsuguda.

Expressing condolences for the lives lost, Murmu shared her heartfelt sympathies via her official channel, stating, “Distressed to learn that the capsize of a boat in Mahanadi River near Jharsuguda, Orissa led to loss of many lives. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for speedy recovery of all those affected by the tragedy.”

The unfortunate incident occurred on Friday afternoon when a boat, carrying over 50 passengers, including women and children, capsized in the Mahanadi River in Lakhanpur, Jharsuguda district.
The death toll from the boat capsize incident has risen to 8, comprising five women and three minor boys.

The passengers, all hailing from the Kharsani area of neighboring Chhattisgarh, were en route to Patharseni in the Ambabhona block of Bargarh district. The tragedy unfolded as they were crossing the Mahanadi at Sharda in the Lakhanpur block of Jharsuguda, resulting in the boat overturning in the middle of the river around 3 pm on Friday.
